Azerbaijan 'targets activists' as it prepares to host Eurovision - BBC

the Eurovision song contest scheduled in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, BBC has addressed the human rights situation in the country.


In a report focusing on the numerous abuses and violence against journalists in the country, Daniel Sandford first speaks of Idrak Abbasov, a hospitalized Azerbaijani journalist receiving treatment in a Baku clinic after being seriously beaten by security guards of an oil company.

According to the BBC correspondent, he had severe concussion, two broken ribs, and he was unsure if he would recover his eyesight.

He had been filming some people who were protesting against their homes being destroyed by the state oil company Socar, Sandford says.
