Azerbaijan on Tuesday assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, replacing the United States.
Agshin Mehdiyev, the permanent representative of Azerbaijan, has told the Russian news agency ITAR-TASS that the country’s foreign policy priorities will remain unchanged in this period.
Azerbaijan will be heading the Council until June. China will then take over the presidency.
According to the Azerbaijani diplomat, the country’s foreign policy agenda will address such issues as international peace and security assistance, as well as the situation in the Balkan’s, Middle East and Africa.
“If our opinion coincides with other countries’ positions, it will be nice; if not, we have our principles which we cannot give upgive up,” he said.
