Pool of Speculation: Dolphin tank's closure raises speculation on health of animals

The dolphin tank (or dolphinarium) which was installed in one of Yerevan's southern districts about a year and half ago, and caused controversy among environmentalists, will temporarily suspend its activity.

Despite an uproar among local environmentalists and animal-rights activists 'Nemo' dolphinarium constructed in Komitas Park, near the "Pantheon" in December 2010, has become one of the most beloved attraction spots for the public. However, speculations over the dolphinarium's closure resulted in different versions, including that dolphins cannot tolerate the conditions provided at the Yerevan attraction.

Lilit Sahakyan, director of Nemo dolphinarium, told ArmeniaNow that the last performance in the dolphin tank will be on Sunday, and then it will be closed and will be reopened only in October. The dolphinarium housed four dolphins and two seals.
