Negotiations over Iran’s nuclear standoff with the West will resume this week in Istanbul, The New York time said, citing the Iranian media.
The return to negotiations on Friday, after a year of tightening sanctions over what the West believes is a program to develop nuclear weapons, had been in doubt after Iran and the other countries involved in the talks — the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany — released conflicting statements about where they would be held.
Iran had voiced concerns about holding them in Turkey, publicly questioning its neutrality. The two nations disagree on at least two critical areas of foreign policy: Turkey opposes Iran’s ally, President Bashar al-Assad in Syria, and Turkey supports a NATO missile shield intended to stop Iranian missiles.
