Gyumri sees protest against Azerbaijani film festival

A crowd of protesters rallied Gyumri on Wednesday afternoon to voice their anger against the Caucasus Center for Peacemaking Initiatives’ plan to hold an Azerbaijani film festival in the city.

The protest was organized upon the initiative of Arman Sahakyan, the owner of FC Shirak, who has nominated his candidacy for parliament in the city’s majority district No. 34.

The protesters expressed intolerance against the idea of screening Azerbaijani films in Armenia’s second largest city.

Addressing the crowd, Gymri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan slammed the authors of the initiative.

“I do not believe that they have descended from the Armenian nation,” he said. “They have nothing to do in Gyumri.”
