Mike Wallace, the dogged American television news reporter and interviewer who took on politicians and celebrities in a 60-year career, has died at age 93.
The Independent has quoted a CBS spokesman as saying that he died on Saturday night. Wallace was still recording interviews at nearly 90 but stopped after heart surgery.
His on-air confrontations with the likes of President John F Kennedy helped make CBS’s 60 Minutes the most successful TV news show ever. He also interviewed Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and Yasser Arafat.
He said in 2006 he would retire “when my toes turn up and … beginning to curl a trifle”.
