Tehran reiterates support for negotiated peace in Karabakh

As the only country sharing a border with the Karabakh conflict zone, Iran expresses its concern over escalating tensions in the region and reiterates that the conflict can be resolved only by way of dialogue, according to a statement released by the Islamic Republic's Embassy in Yerevan.

During his recent visit to Iran Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev reportedly received assurances from the Iranian side that Tehran was ready to render military assistance to Baku.

Such statements aroused concerns in Yerevan about a possible change in Iran's stated position on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
In the weekend statement the Iranian Embassy in Armenia said that Tehran's position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains unchanged as the country continues to back a peaceful settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani dispute.
