State of emergency law passes final reading

The Draft Law on the Legal Regime of State of Emergency passed the National Assembly’s third and final reading on Wednesday.

The bill was adopted with a vote of 63 in favor, but Larisa Alaverdyan of the opposition Heritage party faction in parliament said after the debate that only 63 MPs had actually attending the voting. Her proposal to organize a new debate tomorrow was met with rejection.

Minister of Justice Hrayr Tovmasyan, who was a main speaker at the debate, said the bill is aimed at protecting Armenia’s Constitution and the Armenian citizen.

The National Assembly approved the bill in the second reading earlier today. The controversial legal act allows the Government to use the military for enforcing a state of emergency.
