Armenia-based SDU marks 25th anniversary

le=”text-align: justify; “>On March 17, the National Self-Determination Union (SDU) marks its 25th anniversary.

At his Friday meeting with journalists, SDU Chairman Paruir Hairikyan recalled the SDU creation story. From exile in Siberia, he addressed a letter to USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev. Six months later, in 1987, the SDU was founded.

However, that was not an easy decision to make for the Soviet leader.

Hairikyan’s letter to the USSR president contained a request for forming a union that would struggle for independence. His refusal meant his “perestroika” and “glasnost” were empty words. On the other hand, his consent meant the USSR’s collapse.
