A member of the opposition Heritage party faction in National Assembly, Larisa Alaverdyan has called for terming the 1988 Armenian pogroms in the Azerbaijani town of Sumgait a real genocide.
At a news conference on Wednesday, the MP referred to a documentary film titled Ordinary Genocide, which she said reflected clearly that the atrocious acts were not perpetrated by a band of hooligans, but were rather a genocidal plan elaborated by the Azerbaijani state.
Alaverdyan, who was born in Azerbaijan and is a co-author of the film, said the state policies on the Sumgait pogroms (which trace back their roots to the 1990s) cannot be considered acceptable. She noted that no political or legal assessments have been given to those events on the state level to introduce them to the world community.
