The long-awaited Fifth Unit of the Hrazdan power plant is scheduled to go online January 15, as announced Tuesday by Russian-Armenian ArmRosGazprom (ARG) company, owners of the unit.
Construction of the fifth unit began in the 1980s, but stopped following the Soviet Union's collapse. Russian Gazprom took over the Fifth Block in 2006 as part of an agreement with Armenian government that also raised its controlling stake in Armenia's gas distribution network. According to ArmRosGazprom, the company has invested $456 million into the unit.
The Fifth Block is expected to be more powerful and efficient than the four other operating units of the Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant and its addition should significantly increase Armenia's power generating capacity.
