Violence is frequent in law-enforcement bodies - Ombudsman

Armenia’s Ombudsman has referred to cases of violence in Armenia, saying that it often happens in the country’s law-enforcement agencies and military units.

In a statement published on the website of Armenia’s Human Rights Office, Karen Andreasyan said: “It’s obvious that cases of violation occur often in the Armed Forces, police agencies and penitentiaries.”

Further, Andreasyan mentioned that 54 non-combat deaths registered in Armenia’s Armed Forces during 2010 which were mainly related to torture and inhuman treatment.

Andreasyan said that also a display of inhuman treatment is the recruitment of conscripts with serious health problems to the army.
