Sarkozy could be eliminated in 2012 presidential polls

France’s Nicolas Sarkozy is poised to become first sitting president of the Fifth Republic to be eliminated in the first round of the presidential election to be held next year.

Quoting the Harris poll, the Independent said that Sarkozy, whose popularity has fallen to lowest record levels, would score not more than 19 to 20 percent of the first round vote that is almost certain to be held on 24 April 2012.

If the poll reports prove to be correct during the elections, Sarkozy would not be eligible to contest in the second round.

Only two candidates go forward to the second round under France’s electoral system which was designed to accommodate the traditional bi-polar politics of the country, with the major candidates of “right” and left” qualifying for a run-off.
