Islamic values had different impacts in different periods and sometimes amounted to massacres but Islam cannot be considered a religion of intolerance, an expert of Islamic studies says.
In an interview with Tert.am, Hayk Kocharyan, an expert at the Yerevan State University’s Center for Civilization and Cultural Studies, shared his comments on the religious factor’s role in the Armenian Genocide.
“It is necessary to understand first of all what we mean by saying Islam, as the cocept itself is not homogeneous. Islam, like Christianity, has various trends and movements, which have extremely different approaches to ‘others’,” he said, adding that any failure to distinguish the Islamic trends may result in a conflict of values.
