Two Armenia Army Officers May Face Jail Term For Extorting Money From Servicemen

The detention of two officers from Vazgen Sargsyan military unit of Ararat province has been confirmed by the RA Ministry of Defense with charges of extorting money from contract servicemen. The two will be facing 2-5 years' imprisonment for abuse of power "if these acts were committed for mercenary or group-interest motive".

One of the officers, Vardan Martirosyan, nickname Rozh (Russian, "Ugly Mug"), was detained in mid October. Martirosyan forced some of the soldiers to borrow up to 500,000 drams ($1,400) from ACBA-Credit Agricole Bank and give the money to him, however some of the loan recipients were unable to pay it back, and that caused problems.

Articles in Armenian press say that Martirosyan had also physically abused and humiliated soldiers.
