Minimum Salary in Armenia To Rise Amid Growing Social Spending

The government has announced that the 2011 budget foresees a rise in salaries, but this rise will concern employees of certain sectors only.

At the joint meeting of the National Assembly's standing committees on territorial administration and local government issues, and finance and budgetary affairs on Tuesday Deputy Finance Minister Pavel Safaryan announced that the minimum salary in 2011 will rise by 2,500 drams (about $7) from current 30,000 drams (about $85).

However, he said, this increase does not concern local government employees. Nor will there be a rise in salaries for the state administration system, particularly the legislative, executive and judicial bodies.

Instead, a total of 260 positions in the state system will be slashed in 2011.
