Official Ankara says its congratulation to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on his reelection corresponds to Turkish state traditions.
Such an explanation has been provided by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs after an Azerbaijani official earlier demanded a clarification over President Abdullah Gul's message to this Armenian counterpart.
"The congratulation, which was issued to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan in connection with his reelection as President of the Republic of Armenia, was made in accordance with our state traditions, as it is done after the issuance of the election results in other countries," reads the Turkish Ministry's reply to Azerbaijan's APA news agency.
In its statement the Turkish MFA also noted that Turkey recognized Armenia's independence on December 16, 1991.
