Azeri team applies to compete in boxing tourney in Yerevan, despite issues outside the ring

Azerbaijan's national youth boxing team has applied to compete in a major tournament next month in Yerevan. Its application to the Boxing Federation of Armenia was announced a day before the deadline for submissions, which is Friday.

According to Azeri sports press, the team representing Armenia's arch enemy is awaiting a guarantee that the team would be provided proper security while in Yerevan for the 2012 World Youth Boxing Championship, November 25-December 8.

Last year, an Armenian team competed at a similar event in Azerbaijan capital, Baku. Since, however, enmity between the neighboring countries has escalated since the "Safarov Affair" in which an Azeri army officer who had viscously murdered an Armenian officer at a training session in Hungary and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, was pardoned by the Azeri government.
