A community governor in Armenia's Tavush region will "fight" against his daughter in the local self-government elections slated for September 23.
Rafik Ohanyan, who heads the rural community Acharkut, seems to approve a family member's nomination in the polls. Both he and his daughter, Liana Ohanyan, are members of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia.
Speaking to Tert.am, however, Ohanyan admitted unexpectedly that his daughter's bid is a requirement of the Electoral Code as more than one nomination is necessary for elections to be considered legal.
"Well, the law requires that. There's no one else. They said there is [a candidate], and now that the last has come, there seems to be no one," he said.
The father-and-daughter contest in the north-eastern region is not the only example of "family rivalry in Armenia". In Syunik region, a village governor is preparing to run for election together with his wife.
In Ararat region, the son of the Vanashen village's governor, Khachik Grigoryan, has nominated his candidacy instead of his father. He is registered as the driver of the village administration office.
