Local elections in Armenia: Gyumri mayor quits

Vardan Ghukasyan, incumbent Mayor of Armenia's second largest city, Gyumri, will not participate in the September 9 local elections, Eduard Baghramyan, Chairman of Election Commission 34, told Tert.am.It is noteworthy that 6:00pm, August 10, was the deadline for candidates to apply for participation in the local elections in Armenia's 500 communities, including mayor elections in Gyumri.Lilit Abeghyan, Spokeswoman for the Gyumri Municipality, said: "The mayor is not tired of work, but he is tired of intrigues and falsehoods."Four candidates had been nominated at 6:00pm: Samvel Balasanyan (Prosperous Armenia Party – PAP), Hovsep Simonyan (Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun – ARFD), pensioner Spartak Petrosyan and businessman Andranik Avetisyan.
