Iran to open new port in Caspian Sea

Iran will commission new port Astara in the Caspian Sea in two weeks, Iranian Gilan Province Shipping Office Head Farhad Muntasar Kuhsari said.
 
The new port will have 3.5 million tons of cargo bandwidth but initially it will accept and deliver 2.5 million tons of cargo.Iranian KAVEH organization has signed the agreement on building Iranian port in Azerbaijan's Astara city still in 2007. It was intended to be completed in 5-6 years. Some $78 million was intended to be spent on the construction.
 
Kuhsari said 30-meter seawall will be built for the port's protection. The opening ceremony is slated for "governmental week" usually held August 23-28.
 
"Governmental week" is being held in Iran every August since 1981 when the country's second president, prime minister and other three senior official were killed in a terrorist attack.
