The Swiss-based Armenian opera singer, Varduhi Khachatryan (mezzo soprano), has been invited to perform at a concert dedicated to the celebrated opera star, Maria Callas.
The event will take place in Athens' Great Downtown Concert Hall on September 16.
The concert, dedicated to Callas' memory and glory, has been organized annually by the non-profit organization Athenaeum since 1974. Singers honored with the Grand Prix “Maria Callas” are invited to the event. The Armenian singer won the award in 2001. She also attended the Callas memory concert in 2009.
Speaking to Tert.am, Khachatryan said that her repertoire for this year's concert includes soprano songs. She will perform the arias of Tosca and Norma from the namesake operas by Puccini and Bellini.
Considering Callas the picture of artistism and femininity, Khachatryan thinks in the meantime that any characterization of her would be "very primitive". The singer has a big collection of photos albums and books devoted to the opera legend.
