Women's involvement in high public administration and government positions is again becoming an issue for discussions ahead of the upcoming parliamentary and local elections in Armenia.
While women constitute more than half of Armenia's three-million-strong population and 75 percent of them have higher education, there are very fewin government positions, especially in high public offices.
Despite having legislation enshrining equal rights between men and women, independent Armenia has had only four women occupying ministerial posts. Only two of today's 18 ministers are women. Armenia's 11 provinces have had only one female governor so far (a woman was appointed to lead the Shirak province in 2007; she resigned, however, in 2010). Meanwhile, the posts of city and town mayors still remain beyond reach for women in Armenia, while there are female mayors in a limited number of rural communities.
