Executive against 100% proportional voting system?

The Armenian Government has rejected the proposal on organizing debates over a 100% proportional representation system.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting on Thursday, a deputy minister of justice, Gurgen Muradyan, considered the initiative pointless.

“Transition requires time. Different world countries have different procedures of voting, but that does not much affect the outcome,” he said.

Muradyan noted that voters unwilling to ballot for a specific political party have the option to elect individual candidates represented in the majority list.

The proposal to adopt a 100% proportional representation system was earlier made by leader of the opposition Heritage party faction in parliament, Stepan Safaryan, and a lawmaker of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaksutyun (ARF-D), Artsvik Minasyan.
