Georgia’s second president, Edward Shevardnadze, has serious fears that the construction of a highway connecting Armenia with the Autonomous Republic of Adjara might have demographic challenges for his country.
“The project might create demographic problems for Georgia,” he told the local newspaper Asaval Dasaval.
According to the Georgian website Apsny.ge, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan discussed the plan with his Georgian counterpart in the course of his recent visit to the country.
The two presidents agreed to speed up the construction of the highway expected to connect Armenia with the Georgian town of Batumi via Goderdzi mountain pass.
Saakashvili noted that the new highway would increase the numbers of tourists visiting Georgia.
